What is CAD/CAM technology?

CAD/CAM technology is one of the most innovative technologies in the field of dental prosthetics.

CAD (Computer-Aided Design) is a computer system that enables the creation of detailed three-dimensional models of teeth and prosthetics. Dentists utilize specialized software to design the digital model of the dental structure. With CAD, it is possible to accurately determine the shape, size, texture, and other characteristics of the prosthesis, while also considering the individual features of the patient. This simplifies the design process and allows for the production of high-quality prosthetics with micron-level precision.

Fabrication of dental restorations

The process begins with scanning the patient's teeth using a specialized 3D scanner. Utilizing optical technology, the scanner directs light beams onto the teeth and their surfaces, then reads the reflected beams and transmits the acquired data to a computer. With the aid of specialized software, the computer generates a volumetric 3D image of the teeth. The use of an intraoral 3D scanner is an optimal and efficient diagnostic method for both the dentist and the patient, as it enables the examination of even hard-to-reach areas within the oral cavity.

Following this, 3D modeling is employed to create digital models of teeth and prosthetics on the computer, taking into account the patient's anatomy and the dentist's requirements. 3D printing is used to transform digital 3D models into physical objects. With a specialized 3D printer, the material is deposited layer by layer according to the digital instructions. In dental laboratories, 3D printing is utilized to manufacture dental setups, models of temporary crowns, surgical templates, which are then subjected to processing, final polishing, and coloring.
